dark chocolate helps you lose weight

Chocolate’s delicious! And it’s good for your heart and for diabetes. It even makes you smarter. But it’s bad for you because it’s so fattening, right? Right?

Not right! As we review in our book Chocolate: Superfood of the Gods, several studies actually prove that dark chocolate either doesn’t make you gain weight or even helps you to lose it.

The good news is that a new systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled studies will make you feel even better about indulging in your new favourite health food.

The meta-analysis included 35 studies. Some of them were on obese or overweight people, some were on diabetics and some were on people with cardiovascular disease. Some, though, were on healthy people. So, the real results may be even better than the already remarkable results of this study because people who are already at a healthy weight shouldn’t be expected to lose as much weight.

Still the results were amazing. The more dark chocolate you eat, and the longer you eat it, the more weight you will lose.

The results start slowly and get better. When all the studies were put together, dark chocolate did not contribute to any weight gain; in fact, in non-significantly reduced weight and body mass index while not affecting waist circumference.

But then the news got better. As the studies got longer and the amounts of chocolate got bigger, the results got better. When the studies were stretched to four weeks or longer, weight and body mass index dropped significantly. And when you only considered people who ate 30g a day or more of dark chocolate, their body mass index dropped significantly. The greatest slimming of waist circumference happened at 40-60g a day.

This gourmet serving of science confirms what we already knew. Go ahead and savour your dark chocolate: it’s not going to make you fat!
