olive oil helps prevent and treat Crohn's disease and colitis

Inflammatory bowel disease includes Chron’s and colitis, and it is becoming more and more common. Could something as simple as olive oil help?

Olive oil is loaded in healthy monounsaturated fats. It is a crucial component of the healthy Mediterranean diet. The Mediterranean diet has been shown to promote a healthy intestinal microbiota and to improve inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

So, could olive oil help IBD? A comprehensive review of the research set out to see.

A randomized study found that extra virgin olive oil improved inflammation in people with colitis while significantly improving bloating, constipation, urgency to pass a bowel movement and incomplete defecation. There was a significantly reduction on the gastrointestinal symptom rating scale (Eur J Clin Nutr. 2020;74:891–899).

Another large study found that the oleic acid in olive oil prevents colitis (Eur J Gastroenterol Hepatol. 2014;26:11–18).

This review found that human studies show promising results of olive oil for preventing and treating IBD.
