Cranberry’s Not Just for UTI’s Anymore
Very well known for their power over urinary tract infections, a new meta-analysis reveals that cranberry may benefits beyond UTI’s for cardiovascular health and diabetes.
This meta-analysis of 16 controlled studies included 708 adults. It found that supplementing cranberry, whether as juice or pill, significantly improved the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol. HDL is the good cholesterol, so improving it is protective for your heart. It also found that cranberry significantly reduced insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). When taken as a capsule, tablet or powder, cranberry also significantly reduced fasting insulin levels.
This meta-analysis suggests that cranberry’s benefits may go beyond UTI’s, which may not be surprising for a berry that is loaded in anthocyanin flavonoids.
