saffron improves blood sugar and HbA1c in type 2 diabetics

The beautiful herb saffron can do a lot. Recently, we wrote about the growing pile of research that proves its power over depression and anxiety. Now, new research is discovering the possibility of a whole new power of saffron: it may help treat diabetes.

The 12 week double-blind study included 64 type 2 diabetics who were already taking diabetes drugs. Half of them were given a placebo; half of them were given 15mg of saffron extract twice a day.

Fasting blood glucose went down significantly more in the saffron group than in the placebo group, dropping form 173.25mg/dL to 147.9 mg/dL. HbA1c dropped significantly in the saffron group (from 8.9 to 8.2%), but not in the placebo group (though the difference between the groups may not have been significant). HbA1c is an indicator of glycemic control over a 3 month period and is the most important marker of long term diabetes and blood sugar control.

This study provides some of the first evidence that diabetes can be added to the growing list of conditions that saffron can help.
