omega-3 essential fatty acids prevent heart disease and death from heart disease

The most comprehensive study ever done on supplementing omega-3 fatty acids has confirmed that they are great for your heart!

This important meta-analysis, published in the peer-reviewed journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings, included 40 controlled studies with a combined 135,267 people. All of the studies looked at, not omega-3 fatty acids in your diet, but at supplementing the essential fatty acid.

The results were impressive. Supplementing omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFA) reduced the risk of having a heart attack by 13% and, more importantly, it reduced the risk of fatal heart attacks by 35%. The risk of coronary heart disease dropped by 10%, and dying from coronary heart disease by 9%.

How much do you need? Increasing omega-3 EFAs by 1,000mg a day lowered the risk of cardiovascular disease by 5.8% and the risk of heart attack by 9%. Cardiovascular diseases include, among other conditions, heart attacks, angina, stroke, heart failure, peripheral arterial disease. One of the study’s co-author suggests 1,000-2,000mg a day if you have cardiovascular disease or are recovering from a heart attack.

The authors concluded that supplementing omega-3 EFAs “is an effective lifestyle strategy for CVD prevention, and the protective effect probably increases with dosage.”
