flaxseed treats metabolic syndrome and prevents diabetes and heart disease

Metabolic Syndrome is the increasingly common constellation of any three of abdominal obesity, elevated triglycerides, low HDL-cholesterol, high blood pressure and elevated blood sugar. Treating it is important in the prevention of diabetes and heart disease.

Now a new study has shown that simply sprinkling a little milled flaxseed on your salad can help you win the battle.

Forty-four people with at least three criteria for metabolic syndrome were asked either to simply make lifestyle changes or to make the same changes while sprinkling 30g of flaxseed powder a day onto their salad. The lifestyle changes included 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise 5 days a week.

After only 12 weeks, weight, waist circumference and body mass index shrank significantly more in the flaxseed group. While the lifestyle changes were sufficient to get rid of abdominal obesity in 13% of the people, the addition of flax increased the number to 36%.

Insulin sensitivity and insulin resistance (as measured by HOMA-IR and QUICKI) both also improved significantly more in the flax group, as did triglycerides.

In the lifestyle group, the number of people with metabolic syndrome decreased by 50%; in the flax group the number of people with metabolic syndrome decreased by 82%.

This study suggests that instead of just making exercise and lifestyle changes, people with metabolic syndrome can hugely benefit from the addition of flaxseeds.
