vitamin D prevents breast cancer

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers for women; vitamin D is emerging as an important anticancer nutrient. Could this be a match? Could taking vitamin D help prevent breast cancer? . . .

A newly published study asked this question by looking at a large group of American women between the ages of 35 and 74. This group of women was of special interest because, since they each had a sister with breast cancer, they were considered to be at higher risk.

The intriguing result was that the women with the highest levels of vitamin D had a 21% lower risk of breast cancer. This result suggests that maintaining sufficient levels of vitamin D may protect against breast cancer. So, can supplementing vitamin D prevent breast cancer?

The answer seems to be yes. Following the 50,884 women in the study for 5 years showed that the women who reported taking vitamin D supplements had 11% less risk of breast cancer. The strongest protection seemed to be for postmenopausal women.

This is not the first clue that vitamin D can protect you from breast cancer. In our book, The Family Naturopathic Encyclopedia, we report on two more exciting studies:

“The most exciting study of vitamin D and breast cancer has found not only that the higher the level of vitamin D the lower the risk of breast cancer, but that at the highest level, the risk was reduced by a whopping 50 per cent! Not only does vitamin D prevent breast cancer, it also helps you if you have it. Brand-new Canadian research has found that when vitamin D levels are low, breast cancer is 94 per cent more likely to spread and that there is 73 per cent greater chance of death.”

Other studies have also found that higher blood levels of vitamin D are associated with a lower risk of breast cancer.
