acupuncture improves cognition after stroke

Do you know someone who has recently suffered a stroke? Do you know a good acupuncturist?

Cognitive impairment is a common and troubling condition after a stroke. Between 17% and 92% of people who suffer a stroke are left suffering cognitive impairment. A treatment that helped would improve both cognitive impairment and the depression it causes.

Acupuncture has been used to help with stroke recovery. This meta-analysis looked specifically at acupuncture’s ability to improve cognition after a stroke.

The meta-analysis included 37 controlled studies that compared acupuncture to either no treatment or sham acupuncture in people who had suffered a stroke. All together, there were 2,869 people included in the meta-analysis. Most of them were treated withing 6 months of suffering the stroke.

After 2-12 weeks of acupuncture treatment, acupuncture significantly improved post-stroke cognitive impairment according to both the Mini-Mental State Examination and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment.

This results show that acupuncture safely and significantly helps cognition after a stroke: it worked, and there were no adverse events.
