chromium, yerba mate, white mulberry combination helps prediabetes

You likely already know that chromium is a crucial mineral for fighting diabetes. New research shows that adding this herb may help.

Chromium is helpful for diabetes (Diabetes Care 2006;29:1826-32) even when drugs aren’t able to adequately control it on their own (J Trace Elem Med Biol 2015;32:66-72).

The herb yerba mate can also help diabetics. Nearly a decade ago, researchers showed in a pilot study that diabetics can significantly improve their glucose levels, HbA1c (the most important marker of long term diabetes and blood sugar control) and cholesterol by drinking yerba mate tea (J Am Coll Nutr 2011;30(5):320-32).

Now a new study has teamed the mineral and the herb up together with the addition of white mulberry. This new double-blind study gave pre-diabetics either the natural combination or a placebo for 3 months.

Fasting blood sugar went down by 7.8% in the group taking the natural combination. Insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) went down by 7.9% and improved in everyone on the combination supplement. Blood sugar control was better in the natural combination group, and it returned to normal in 67% of them. 16.6% of people taking the natural supplement returned to normal blood sugar.

The chromium/yerba mate/white mulberry group also reduced their triglycerides by 8.3%.

This study suggests that taking chromium and yerba mate with white mulberry can help people who are on their way to diabetes not to go there.
